Climbing a mountain is a daunting task for anyone, but imagine if leaving the house was the equivalent of taking on an expedition…
For people suffering from spinal cord injuries (SCIs), everyday tasks become much more challenging and can result in people losing their independence.
In fact, the theme for this year’s Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day is #EverydayMountains, which aims to highlight the struggles that people with SCIs face daily.
Alongside this, individuals with face barriers every day, from there not being adequate accessibility measures to the wider stigma surrounding disabilities impacting self-esteem and quality of life.
What is a spinal cord injury?
Did you know that approximately 2,500 people in the UK experience a spinal cord injury every year?
This can differ in severity but as the spinal cord allows the brain to communicate messages to the body (including muscles and organs), a spinal cord injury has a large impact on mobility.
The degree of the impact differs between individuals and can result in partial or complete loss of sensory functions or motor control throughout the body.
Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day aims to increase the awareness of spinal cord injuries, alongside the aforementioned challenges faced.
